Media notes
Character 11. A1 (root): second root development: one main radicular pulpal canal without an anterior radicular canal (0); one main radicular canal with an anterior radicular canal (1); one main radicular canal and developed anterior radicular canal (2). Remarks: Unordered. Outgroup Sorex species and several ingroup species (e.g. M. okuensis, C. obscurior, C. lasiura, C. leucodon, C. serezkyensis, D. pulchellum) without a second root remnant of A1 (Character 011: A). This state determined by fully absent an anterior radicular pulpal canal despite the second root remnant presence on the enamel surface (as a torus-like or crest-like bulging from anterior part of the crown to the main root base in apical view; see an apical view of M. okuensis in [character 10, state 1]. Most ingroup species bear weakly developed the second root remnant. This state determined by the presence of the anterior radicular pulpal canal, which connected to the main canal like a loop (Character 011: B). In some species (S. etruscus) the anterior canal is small and barely visible. We have not identified a direct relationship between a lateral groove presence and developing of the anterior radicular canal of A1. Only two species, N. fodiens and S. murinus, bear well-developed anterior radicular pulpal canal of A1, which separated from the main canal; in addition, the second root is more expressed (see Character 010: C). For details see S8.
